Knit Fingerless Mittens #2 by Learn2Knit

Materials:

5.5 or 6 mm (#9 or 10 U.S.) needles

1 – 100 gram skein of chunky yarn (#5 weight)

Needle for sewing seam and weaving in ends

Instructions:

Chunky fingerless mitts to knit and purl. Easy.

Chunky fingerless mitts to knit and purl. Easy.

Both Hands:

Cast on 29 Stitches.

Ribbing: K1, P1, for 12 rows or 2 1/2 inches. (This is known as a 1×1 ribbing)

Change to stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) for 26 rows.

 

Right hand:

Row 1 of decrease: Beginning on the right side (knit side), k1, sl1, k1, psso, k11; sl1, k1, psso, k13. 27 st.

Row 2: Purl.

Row 3: K1, sl1, k1, psso, k10; sl1, k1, psso, k12. 25 st.

Row 4: Purl.

Row 5: K1 sl1, k1, psso, k9; sl1, k1, psso, k 11. 23 st.

Cast off loosely.

 

Left hand:

Work same as for right hand to decrease. (38 rows)

Row 1: k13, k2 tog, k11, k2 tog, k1. 27 st.

Row 2: Purl.

Row 3: k12, k2 tog, k10, k2 tog, k1. 25 st.

Row 4: Purl.

Row 5: k11, k2 tog, k9, k2 tog, k1. 23 st.

Cast off loosely.

Sew in ends of yarn.

Sew seam from cast-on row to thumb opening (4 inches). Leave 2 inch opening for thumb. Sew seam to top of mitten (3 inches)

Abbreviations:

K Knit
P Purl
sl1 Slip stitch to right needle knitwise
psso Pass slipped stitch over the stitch you have just knit
k2tog Knit 2 stitches together
